In der Geschichte hatten die Menschen im nordwestchinesischen Gebiet Xinjiang selten Kontakt mit den Bewohnern des Qinghai-Tibet-Plateaus, und das obwohl beide Regionen benachbart sind. Doch dank einer neuen Eisenbahnverbindung kommen sie sich bald näher. Die Golmud-Korla-Eisenbahn verbindet die kreisfreie Stadt Golmud in der nordwestchinesischen Provinz Qinghai und die Stadt Korla im Zentrum des Uigurischen Autonomen Gebiets Xinjiang. Diese Strecke wird auch als Neue Seidenstraße in der Wüste bezeichnet.
Die Golmud-Korla-Eisenbahn hat eine Gesamtlänge von 1214 Kilometern und geht voraussichtlich im Jahr 2020 in Betrieb. Die Hauptstruktur der Bahnstrecke in der Provinz Qinghai ist im Mai abgeschlossen worden.
